“They put a purple robe on (Jesus), then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him.– Mark 15:17 NIV

I took advantage of the warmer weather the other day to put up my outdoor Christmas lights. I usually wait for the coldest day of November to do this, but this year I got smart. My color theme this year is simple – green lights on the garage and house, white lights on the wreath, and a red rope light spiraling up the porch post like a candy cane. Why do we associate certain colors with Christmastime (red and green, silver and gold, blue, white, and purple)? Beyond the fact that they look beautiful on Christmas decorations, each color has a meaning that points to a crucial part of the Messiah’s birth story.

Beginning November 30th, each Sunday’s message in Advent and Christmas will focus on a different Christmas color. As part of the fun, I encourage you to wear something with that day’s color. It can be a shirt, a sweater, a hat, or even a light-up necklace. It doesn’t have to be a solid color, just some part of it that ties in with that day’s theme. Here is the color calendar list:

NOV 30 – Purple

DEC 07 – Green

DEC 14 – Red

DEC 21 – Blue

DEC 24 – White (Christmas Eve)

DEC 28 – Silver

JAN 04 – Gold
