God says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.
– Romans 6:4 CEB

How can it be August already? It seems like summer just began a few weeks ago, and already we are just over two weeks away from the State Fair. How does summer seem to go by faster every year?

I came across a National Geographic article that said it is not just our imagination. This summer we will have three of the shortest days in recorded history. On July 9 and 22, the rotation of the Earth actually sped up, so each day was shorter (by 1.34 milliseconds). The next day it will do this is August 5. It has something to do with the position of the moon and the rotation of the Earth’s core. So, according to that, our summer got shorter by over 4 milliseconds!

This may not be enough to totally explain why summer seems so short this year, but I’m going to blame it on that. It couldn’t be that I got so busy doing summer things that I failed to stop and just appreciate the gift of each day. Or could it? It may not be just the rotation of the planet that has sped up. Maybe it’s me.

Reflecting on that, I want to encourage you to slow down. Resist the urge to cram in even more to what’s left of summer. It’s okay to simply sit in the shade with a cool drink or to walk in the grass barefoot (without thinking that it’s time to mow the lawn again). It’s more than okay to simply be still and know God and be thankful for every millisecond of summer.

Peace,
Pastor Mark
