“And if our hope in Christ is only for this life, we are more to be pitied than anyone in the world.” – 1 Corinthians 15:19 NLT
I played football with my 7-year-old grandson yesterday. At first, he was content to have me throw the ball to him as he leaped into a pile of leaves, dreaming he was making the winning catch in the Superbowl. Over and over, I threw and he leaped. When he grew tired of that, we played a more aggressive game where I had to run and kick and catch the ball. I did this hoping I would be able to get out of bed the next day when everything stiffened up. Such is the difference between the hopes and dreams of a 7-year-old and his grandpa.
It seems that age restricts what we can hope for. At seven you can hope to be a pro football player, a rock and roll hero, or even a president someday. Most of us are beyond being able to hope for such things. But, no matter what our age, we have the greatest hope of all – the hope of eternal life in Jesus Christ. Not even scoring the winning touchdown in the Superbowl can compare to what is waiting for each of us with Jesus.
I am grateful that I am not too sore today (though it always seems the worst pain is on the second day after an injury). But I know my days of keeping up with my grandson are quickly coming to an end. That’s okay; I don’t have to dream of Superbowls. My hope is in the Lord.
God bless you,
Pastor Mark
