09 / Sunday Read Colossians 2:9 / John 1:1-4, 14 / John 14:7-11

Overview: In part 2 of our message series, we discuss what the Nicene Creed tells us about the nature of Jesus, and why it is so important to our faith.

10 / Mon – What a mystery  |  Read John 1:14, 18

It is a mystery how God the Son took on flesh and became one of us while still being God. There is great joy at Christmas each year as we celebrate his incarnation. We grieve that it was because of our sin he was crucified, even though he gave himself willingly. And it is his resurrection that gives us hope in the promise of eternity with him. What incredible love! Why would you ever doubt how precious you are in his eyes? Why not express your gratitude right now?

11 / Tue – Compassion  |  Read Hebrews 4:14-16

Are you tempted to think no one understands what you are going through? Then remind yourself that Jesus does. Think about it. God the Son became a baby, totally dependent on his parents. He grew up in a large family (Matthew 13:55-56). He lost his father and, as the oldest son, he had to work hard to provide for his mother and siblings. Throughout his life, he faced temptation, grief and pain, rejection and betrayal and ultimately his own death. Whatever your troubles, will you share them with Jesus? He does understand. Better than anyone else can.

12 / Wed – Exact representation  |  Read Colossians 2:9 / John 14:8-11 / Hebrews 1:3

God the Son came to die for us but he also came to show us what the Father is like. It is hard to grasp what you cannot see but Jesus lived in a way that mirrored God the Father for us. As you read the account of his earthly life in the gospels, see how he treated people and loved even the most unloveable. Notice his patience, his kindness, his boldness in confronting evil. He did not excuse sin but offered mercy and a way back. What do you love most about this Man?

13 / Thu – His name  |  Read Acts 4:11-12 / Isaiah 7:14 / 1 Corinthians 12:3

Do you know what your name means? God the Father gave the name God the Son was to be called when he was born, Jesus, meaning Yahweh/God saves. It denotes his mission. Immanuel is Jesus’ identity meaning God with us. The title Lord is a declaration of his deity, supreme authority and equality with God. Christ means the anointed one or the long-awaited Messiah. These are just a few of his names. What else is Jesus named as? How do these names help you know him better?

14 / Fri – Everyday metaphors  |  Read John (various verses listed below)

Jesus knew it would be difficult for people to understand who he was so he used everyday terms. John recorded them for us. He is the bread of life (6:35), the light of the world (8:12), the gate of protection (10:9), our good shepherd (10:11), the resurrection and the life (11:25), the way, truth, and life (14:6) and the true vine (15:5). As you consider these descriptions, what new insights do you find about Jesus’ identity ? Which of these do you need him to be in this moment? Ask him to help you see where he is at work in your life right now.

15 / Sat – Where is he now?  |  Read Romans 8:34 / Acts 7:55-56

God the Son was present before the world was created. Later he lived as a man to show us what the Father is like. His death satisfied the penalty for our sin for all time. His resurrection proved he was who he claimed to be. He sent the Holy Spirit to continue the work he started. So where is he now? In heaven. Seated at the right hand of God the Father. Waiting for just the right moment to come and get you. Is there anything greater than having him as the ultimate Friend?
