JUN 19 / Sunday – Read Luke 9:28-36 / 2 Peter 1:16-18
Overview: God does many great things…not so that we’ll say, “Hey, that was great” and build little shrines. It’s so we realize how great the Lord is and commit ourselves to listen and follow.
20 / Mon – X marks the spot | Read Luke 9;28-36
Peter, James and John experienced the greatness of God in a way that few people have. Human nature tends to build shrines to remember what happened. That’s what Peter suggested. A shrine commemorates the past and can become a place of pilgrimage, where others hope for the same experience. It is good to remember what God has done but you can get so focused on those events in the past that you miss what God is doing in the present. Does this ever happen to you?
21 / Tue – On display | Read Romans 1:20
Outdoor camping is one of the best places to realize how great God is. The sky seems to stretch on forever and the night stars blaze as far as the eye can see. There, it is easy to recognize how small you are in the grand scheme of things. All that God has created reflects his glory. You can see it if you have the right perspective. Where have you seen the grandeur of God on display? What was your reaction? Awe? That’s what happens when a person truly encounters God’s greatness.
22 / Wed – A low view? | Read 1 Chronicles 29:10-13
Even for Christ followers, it is too easy to entertain a low view of God. A.W. Tozer saw this in his generation. The resulting book, The Knowledge of the Holy, was written out of his passion that people see God accurately. What about you? Do you consider how God is different from all he has created and the people he has made? Ask the Lord to expand your understanding and to give you more glimpses of his true nature. It will inspire a greater love and ability to worship him.
23 / Thu – Only God is God | Read Jeremiah 10:6 and 32:17-19a
Only God is infinite, self-existent, self-sufficient, all-powerful, everywhere at the same time, who understands all things completely. Have you seen others try to be some of these things? Or even you yourself? It’s humbling to admit that you are finite. That you exist because God wills it. That you aren’t able to be in two places at one time. Or that you don’t have complete knowledge of anything, not even yourself. God is God and we are not. Let this truth bring relief to your soul. Rest in him.
24 / Fri – A reflection | Read John 14:7-11
You were created in God’s image. You cannot be any of the things that are uniquely God’s but you can reflect him in other ways. God has utter purity of character and you can grow in that way. God loves with no exceptions. Will you? He is good and generosity flows out as a result. Do your actions reflect his goodness? He is patient, wise and trustworthy to name other qualities you can emulate. Will others see a reflection of God when they look at you today?
25 / Sat – Revisiting Father’s Day | Read Luke 15:11-24
You may not be a father but you had one. Was there a good relationship between you two? Maybe not. Every dad makes mistakes. Some even cause great wounds. But whatever your story is, Jesus shows you who your perfect Father is. This story he told is one illustration. What insight does the Holy Spirit reveal that might apply to you as a son or daughter? Ask the Lord to help you come to truly know him as your heavenly Father.
