In Southport, North Carolina, near where we vacationed this summer, is a store called the Christmas House. The place is exactly what its name says. It is Christmas there all year round. The house is packed with Christmas trees, Christmas ornaments, candy and gifts – even in July. It seems strange to think about Christmas things in July, but it is always busy. Besides, why not think about God sending Jesus 365 days a year?
The church has its own version of Christmas in July. We call it VBS – Vacation Bible School. In preparation, packages have already been arriving daily from Amazon, UPS, and the post office. The elves (Pastor Julie and company) have been scurrying around frantically getting ready for the big day. Decorations are put up. Food is purchased. Lists are checked. Invites have gone out.
Soon a great crowd will gather to have fun, sing God’s praises, and hear the bible stories – just like at Christmas. In fact, the bible stories for day 1 of VBS this year are the Christmas stories in Luke and Matthew. It’s Christmas in July at Resurrection. And at the center will be the children – just like
at Christmas.
If you have children, grandchildren or neighbor kids, sign them up right now for VBS. It starts Monday, July 10. You don’t want them to miss out. This year’s VBS is Stellar: Shine Jesus’ Light. It has a space theme and will be loads of fun.
Whether you have children or not, please pray for all the children, leaders, and helpers who will spend the week together learning to shine Jesus’ light.
Pastor Mark
P.S. God bless you over the 4th of July holiday. Remember it is Christ who sets us free (It is for freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. – Galatians 5:1).
