“Taste and see that the Lord is good” – Psalm 34:8
March is the month of mud. March is between powdery snow and lush green grass. Ice fishing and summer fishing. Freezing temps and melting temps. If March were a beverage, it would be the disgusting lukewarm sludge between hot coffee and iced coffee. And I used to hate it. It was my least favorite month of the year. Then I discovered the sweet joy of making maple syrup, and my whole perspective changed.
Now I look forward to March. March can’t last long enough for me. When the warm sunshine of April shuts down the maple trees and the syrup season is over, I am actually disappointed. What a wonderful change of perspective.
The same thing happened to me and worship. When my faith (and my age) was young, worship was something to be endured, like the muddy days of March. Sure, there were a few times when it was exciting, like Easter and Christmas Eve, but most of the time it was “boring” to me back then. In fact, the first song I ever wrote included the lyrics “even though at church you sometimes feel bored”.
But as my faith deepened and I fell more and more in love with God, worship became the highlight of my week. I couldn’t wait for Sunday. And now I feel disappointed if anything prevents me from coming to worship. It’s a beautiful change of perspective.
I don’t really care if you like March or not, but I do hope you love Jesus and love to worship the Lord. It’s a very sweet thing.
God bless you this March,
Pastor Mark
