“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.– Galatians 6:9-10 NIV

The year is new, but it seems that the old problems have followed us into 2026. There are still wars, illness, economic worries, and political fighting. The problems seem so big and intractable that we can feel helpless. What difference can we make?

Remember the parable of the starfish:

At daybreak, a man walks along a beach where many thousands of starfish have washed up on shore. Soon they will bake under the rising sun. In the distance, he notices another person walking towards him. Over and over again, this person bends over to pick up a starfish and throw it back into the sea. When they meet, the man says, “Why are you throwing starfish back? There are millions of starfish on this beach. What you’re doing won’t matter.” The person paused for a moment and looked at the starfish in her hand. “Matters to this one,“ she said, and she tossed it back into the water.

We may not be able to solve all of today’s problems, but we can do something–something that matters, even if it is just to one other person. “Don’t become weary of doing good,” the bible tells us. “As we have opportunity, let us do good to all people.” May you find an opportunity to do good to someone today. It does matter.

Peace,
