AUG 17 / Sunday Read Psalm 46:1-11
Overview:During the time of King Hezekiah and the siege of Jerusalem by the Assyrian army, God encouraged his people to trust in his protection, presence, and power. Advice that never grows old.
18 / Mon – Important vs urgent | Read Psalm 131:2 / Psalm 46:10a
It’s a busy, noisy world. How about your mind? Is it busy too with thought-traffic? Do you settle into your quiet time with God but have trouble focusing on His word or prayer because your mind is inundated by thoughts of things you have to do? Are you tempted to stop and quickly take care of something before coming back to your conversation with the Lord? This has been called the ‘tyranny of the urgent’ because they push important things to the back of the line. You counteract that tyranny when you pause and ask what is most important. Try it.
19 / Tue – Powerful words | Read Psalm 46:10-11
These powerful verses lay down a prerequisite. You must understand that God is God. It starts by being still and recognizing that there is no other. When you believe this, it puts everything else in perspective and solves a hundred other problems. No one can come against His plan and succeed. These words settle any question about who is in charge, and this truth can put your mind at ease. What, if anything, keeps you from believing that your God is the God?
20 / Wed – A practical example | Read 1 Sam 23:4 and 30:8 / 2 Sam 2:1 and 5:18-19, 22-23
King David’s strength was that he consistently inquired of the Lord and then obeyed. David didn’t have to, for he was, after all, the king. Was this a habit he developed as a young man? The humility he modeled was a hallmark in his son Solomon’s early days. For both of them, troubles came when they neglected to ask or wait to hear before acting. How about you? Do you take the time, in your decision-making or when walking through a confusing time in life, to inquire of the Lord? Will you do so, even if you think you have the knowledge or ability to act on your own?
21 / Thu – Earth, wind and fire | Read 1 Kings 19:1-18, especially v.11-12
Elijah’s incredible victory over the priests of Baal was energizing, but when he heard the wicked queen vowing to have his head, it sent him running for the hills. He questioned where God was in all this. Notice the interesting way God revealed Himself to Elijah. Do you wish God would speak to you in powerful, earth-shaking ways? Sometimes He does, but more often, He speaks quietly. Are your spiritual ears tuned in? What is He saying to you today?
22 / Fri – Watch and see | Read Exodus 14:10-14
There are times when the enemy comes after you. It may be through circumstances designed to discourage you, or worse, inspiring people to hate you for no reason, so they try to tear down your reputation with lies and half-truths. Read these words of Moses as he spoke to the Israelites in a perilous position. They obeyed, and you know the rest of the story. In your situation, will you be still? Quit trying to defend yourself and let the Lord fight for you. You can trust Him.
23 / Sat – You can be real with God | Read Psalm 25:9
Our culture praises strong, independent people who achieve impressive goals through their ingenuity, grit, and perseverance. To need help is seen as a weakness, so people often try to hide behind a confident, invincible persona. That is not what God thinks. He values honest people who acknowledge their need and look to Him for help and strength. You can come to God just as you are. What do you need to be honest about with God today?
