JUL 30  / Sunday – Read Isaiah 11:1-9 / Isaiah 65:17-25

People really like being entertained by cats doing crazy stuff, but God did crazy stuff with wild cats to teach us three important life lessons.

31 / Mon – Cats are not gods  |  Read Ex 20:3-5a / 2 Kings 17:24–27, 40-41

Cats were worshiped in ancient Egypt. Two goddesses, Bastet and Sekhmet, had human bodies, one with a cat’s head and the other with the head of a lioness. The first commands God gave the Israelites as they left Egypt were to have no other gods and to not make for an idol in the form of anything on earth or in heaven to worship it. These commands may seem unnecessary today but stop to consider: is something creeping in between you and the Lord. Is it becoming more important than it should be? Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what you need to know.

AUG 01 / Tue – Don’t play with cats  |  Read Dan 6:1-28 / 2 Tim 4:16-18

Lions are called king of the jungle for good reason. They are large, powerful animals with strong muscles. They can run up to speeds of 40-50mph and have loud roars that strike terror in all that hear them. So what happens when you get lowered into a den of lions for an overnighter? Ask Daniel. Or maybe your ‘lions’ are dangerous people as Paul’s were. Name your lions and know this: what saved Daniel and Paul will also save you.

02 / Wed – Don’t underestimate your lion  |  Read 1 Pet 5:8-9a / Matt 20:28b

A lion roars to protect its territory and to ward off intruders. Its roar can be heard from as far away as five miles. Peter describes your greatest enemy, the devil, as a roaring lion on the prowl, looking for someone to devour. In our culture today, people joke about the devil but be very careful not to underestimate him. What attitude does Peter advise us to take? Why is being alert important? How can you do so and not give into fear? What encouragement do you find in Jesus’ last statement?

03 / Thu – Don’t run away  |  Read Jn 14:17 / First Jn 4:4

Older lions often lose their teeth and their ability to hunt. Consequently, they’ve been observed using their still-powerful roar, causing their prey to panic and run in the opposite direction where younger lions are hiding in the bush. What fears make you want to run away? What would happen if you decided to face them instead? The God who lives in you is greater than anything or anyone you encounter in life. Remind yourself of this fact whenever you face difficult people or situations.

04 / Fri – When lions attack  |  Read Judges 14:5-6a

What Samson did here seems impossible. And it literally is. Lions have 2-3 times greater and more fibrous muscle mass than humans. Lions outweigh and are larger than most people. What gave Samson the supernatural strength to destroy this lion? The world of comics portrays different superheroes and Samson fit that category in his day. Supernatural strength is available when you face your lions. Don’t be intimidated by what is attacking you and also never underestimate what the Holy Spirit can do through you.

05 / Sat – The real Lion  |  Read Rev 5:5 / Is 11:1-9 / Is 65:17-25 

Jesus is called the Lion of Judah, more wild than any lion on earth, more powerful, more dangerous to evil, and stronger than anything that exists anywhere. Read the description of his kingdom. You’ll see that it is a place of incredible peace, as illustrated by the animals’ behavior, a place where even natural enemies co-exist. This is where you get to go live, with him, the Lion of Judah who conquers all evil. Will you let this picture of your future motivate all that you do while you still live here?
