“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16 NIV
When I’m biking through the park, a gray squirrel will suddenly materialize as if out of nowhere and dash in front of me. Many are the times when it’s taken some acrobatics on the part of the squirrel (and me) to avoid a collision.
The other day a squirrel again dashed in front of me, but there were no squealing brakes or acrobatic leaps – I had plenty of time to slow down and just watch it cross since I could see it coming from a hundred yards away. That’s because it was a white squirrel.
White squirrels can’t hide. Whether sitting in a tree or running across the park, everyone notices a white squirrel. And while this might make it easy prey for a predator, it surely helps the squirrel avoid becoming roadkill. A white squirrel can’t blend in. It sticks out like a flashing light.
Jesus says it should be the same way for us Christians. By the good that we do, by how we treat others, by the way we shine Christ’s light, we stick out in a gray world. By our very nature as followers of Jesus, we don’t blend in. Christ’s light makes us stick out. And that’s a good thing for Christians…and squirrels.
Have a great week!
